CERTIFIED LITERACY CONSULTANTS

Orion can help buildings analyze current literacy services for alignment to state recommendations. Guidance on improving the system can be specialized for individual systems and based on current resources and other school factors. Professional development on a variety of strategies related to literacy is available including onsite trainings, support groups, online workshops, and more. Consultants can also assist with assessment needs of the district including training in some of the products approved for Kansas schools.

Our literacy consultants are currently completing additional training to facilitate Tier II / III services.

Understanding exactly what your district should be doing in regards to identifying and supporting struggling readers can be confusing. Here are a few questions for you to consider:

Initial KSDE Training: Have all of your required staff been trained in the initial 6 hours of training from the state? (Deadline for completion: August 2021)
Screening: Do you currently have screeners in place to universally screen every K-12 student in your district at the required grade levels and with the required assessments? (Deadline for implementation: Should be screening now)
Intervention: After at-risk students are identified on the universal screeners, does your district have a tiered system in place to provide interventions for these students immediately and provide progress monitoring?
Future Professional Development: Does your district professional development plan make time for the ongoing, additional training on the subjects of dyslexia, supporting struggling readers, and effective reading instructional practices as required by the state that should occur each year?
